Under the Spotlight: New Work from Western Sydney

Hear exceptional writers perform readings of their latest works in the eclectic theatre setting of The Baroque, including theatre lighting. Hosted by George Haddad and featuring writers Shaun Prescott, Eda Gunaydin, and Felicity Castagna*.

Following this session, Dr Kate Fagan, Director of the Writing and Society Research Centre (WSRC), Western Sydney University, will be available to discuss opportunities and writing programs at the WSRC including Masters and Doctoral studies in Literature and Creative Writing.

George Haddad is an award-winning writer and artist practising on Gadigal land whose work explores masculinities and the limitations of language in communicating truths. His novella, Populate and Perish, was the winner of the 2016 Viva La Novella competition.

Shaun Prescott is a writer based in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Shaun’s novels include The Town (2017) and Bon and Lesley (2022), and he has self-released several small books of fiction, including Erica from Sales and The End of Trolleys, and has been the editor of Crawlspace Magazine.

Eda Gunaydin is a Turkish-Australian essayist whose writing explores class, race, diaspora and Western Sydney. Her debut essay collection Root & Branch was published in 2022.

Felicity Castagna is an award-winning writer. She won the young adult fiction prize at the 2014 Prime Minister's Literary Awards for her book, The Incredible Here and Now. She won the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards for her book, Girls in Boys' Cars.

Dr Kate Fagan is a widely published writer, musician and academic whose third volume, First Light, was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and the Age Book of the Year Award.
